Anatomy of a CAD Program
The Autodesk computer-aided design (CAD) package includes the software itself, plus a variety of other supporting files, such as a drawing template, utilities, sample data and documentation. We’ll look at these here as we explore how the package is put together.
The software itself includes a drawing and page editor and a set of tools that draw, edit, annotate and work with drawings. The drawing editor is both a design and a drafting tool and can be customized to provide a layout suitable for design or for drafting.
The page editor is a page layout and view tool that allows you to place objects (such as text, text boxes, shapes and dimensions) on the page and allows you to change the look of the page.
The Draw tool is the main graphics tool for drawing. You can select objects that are drawn on the screen, manipulate them, and place them on the page. You can scale, rotate, skew, mirror, change color and change line width. You can also annotate a drawing with text boxes and pushpins.
The Workplane and Measure tools are used to create, modify and view planes and measurements. The Workplane tool can be used to define a plane or a curved surface on which you can do simple drafting.
The Measure tool can be used to create or modify measurements, such as distances or area.
The Find tool is used to select and manipulate objects on the screen, as well as to search for objects within a drawing.
The Palettes tool is used to quickly access commonly used drawing commands and actions.
The Tools Palette contains a tool for each of the major objects, such as lines, shapes, dimension boxes, arcs, splines and text. The tools are organized in the palette according to function, for example, the dimension box tool and its sub-tools are on the dimension box palette.
The Palettes are used to access most of the commands within the program.
The Plotter tool is used to preview the results of a drawing, make changes and preview them.

A layout refers to the organization of a drawing. It can be defined by a set of elements and relations that define how the elements are to be placed on the page.
Layout processes are the processes of creating and organizing a set of drawings. They can be divided into four broad types:
Generation: creating a document that represents the user’s design intent.
Rendering: rendering a document into a format (e.g. Web page, PDF, Word, Visio, AutoCAD DXF, AutoCAD PDF)
Conversion: creating a working document for output to another file format or to another application
Physical layout: arranging the objects in the final layout to create a drawing

Identifying high-risk drinking patterns is important for college student populations because of their high prevalence of harmful drinking. This study examined whether college students can effectively identify their own drinking patterns, and how accurately they report their alcohol consumption in comparison with objective measures. Participants in this study were a convenience sample of undergraduate students in a southeastern university from December to May of 2011 (n = 158). This study’s aims were to assess the ability of college students to identify the drinking patterns of their peers, and to compare the students’ self-report of drinking with objective measures of consumption. Students were able to accurately identify high-risk drinking patterns among their peers, and their knowledge of their own drinking patterns was also accurate. The majority of students reported drinking more than they actually consumed. Students who drank the most often reported drinking less than they consumed.
